Alberta Feedlot Animal Health

and Welfare Surveillance System (AFHWS)

AFHWS COMMUNICATIONS

  • AFAHWS receives anonymized annual data on disease morbidity and mortality from participating Alberta feedlots via their feedlot veterinarians.
  • Objectives of this work, and methods for data collection and analysis are described below (“Alberta Feedlot Animal Health and Welfare Surveillance – Overview”).
  • After the annual analysis is complete, draft summaries are shared with participating veterinarians and the rest of the research team, for review.
  • Finalized annual feedlot morbidity and mortality data are summarized in infographics and presented below.

AFHWS Infographics

       FROM DATA TO INFORMATION

  • AFHWS research team develops communication materials on summarized data for the beef industry, veterinarians, and other interested stakeholders.
  • This infographic provides an overview of the data collection, analysis, and communications process.

AFHWS Overview
  • The Alberta feedlot industry, veterinary practices, and other stakeholders are working together to implement and maintain a feedlot animal health welfare surveillance system in finishing feedlots (AFHWS)
  • Collection of high-quality feedlot data allows the beef industry to detect, benchmark and monitor disease rates over time to identify risks to animal health and welfare to enhance industry knowledge and improve public agriculture awareness.
